Controlling a Lawn Sprinkler With a Well Pump

Controlling a sprinkler with a well pump is an efficient way to water an area that does not have access to a municipal water supply. Well pumps generate enough force to operate a sprinkler head efficiently while still supplying the house with water for other plumbing fixtures. Controlling the flow of water from the pump to the sprinkler head is a matter of installing a ball valve along the supply pipe. Adding a ball valve requires the use of a few tools and a general knowledge about plumbing.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the well pump by shutting off the main circuit breaker.

    • 2

Locate the supply line that runs from the well to the house. Identify a spot along the pipe that's closest to the desired location of the sprinkler head.

    • 3

Mark the pipe with a marker and make a second mark 3 inches away from the first mark. Cut on these two lines using a hacksaw or pipe cutter to remove the section of pipe.

    • 4

Place one end of a compression three-way ball valve onto one end of the exposed pipe. Gently pull back on the fitting and slip the other end of the exposed pipe into the other side of the ball valve. Allow the two sides of the pipe to fall back in line, securing the compression valve.

    • 5

Connect the sprinkler supply pipe with the ball valve by pushing the end of the sprinkler pipe into the opening on the top of the ball valve until it clicks into place.

    • 6

Turn on the power to the well pump and turn the handle on the ball valve to the "on" position. The attached sprinkler line should charge with water and begin spraying within a few seconds.
