How to Build a Water Jet Fountain

Water features are an ideal addition to any backyard or garden. But having a fountain doesn't mean you have to spend a lot of money. Creating your own fountain using a jet pump kit from any hardware store is simple and requires few tools. By adding a substrate to the base of any container and the pump, you can create an attractive and low-cost fountain that complements any landscaping or back porch.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the bottom of a container, such as a plant pot, with medium-sized rocks. Cover at least 2 inches of the base with the rocks.

    • 2

Insert the small tube into the top of the jet pump. Press down until the tube clicks into place.

    • 3

Unfurl the power cable that's attached to the jet pump.

    • 4

Fill the container with water. Set the jet pump into the water at least 6 inches deep, but not so deep that the tube on the top is submerged. The tube must be above the water line.

    • 5

Set a medium-sized rock so that it rests on the top of the submerged pump. This will help hold the pump in place.

    • 6

Drape the power cord over the edge of the container and run it to an outlet. Plug in the power cord to begin the fountain's operation. It may take a few seconds for the pump to charge and water to spray from the top of the tube.

    • 7

Adjust the flow of water by turning the flow dial on the side of the submerged pump clockwise or counterclockwise until the height of the ejected water reaches the desired level. Set the water discharge rate so that the water falls back into the container.
