How to Increase the Water Volume in a Pipe

You go to water the plants out front and little more than a trickle drips from the hose. You load the washing machine and it takes forever to fill up. The problem may be low water volume. If you have low water flow in your home, there could be many different reasons. Most of the fixes are simple and do not require a plumber. Begin by checking the water pressure with a gauge, which costs about $10, and fits most exterior faucets.

Attach a water pressure gauge to any outdoor faucet. Turn on the faucet and check the pressure indicator. According to Popular Mechanics' website, the typical water pressure to a home is approximately 40 to 45 pounds per square inch.

Turn the adjusting screw on your main water valve to change the pressure setting if you find that your water water pressure is too low. Turn the adjusting screw counter-clockwise to reduce pressure, and clockwise to increase it. Use a screwdriver and pliers, if needed. Just 5 psi more can make a significant difference in water pressure in some areas. According to Popular Mechanics, the total water pressure should not exceed 60 psi in most circumstances.

Check individual faucets. If the water volume is low for just one faucet or shower, the problem may be a buildup of debris inside your faucet's screen.

    • 4

Remove the fixture with pliers and check the screen inside the nozzle. If the screen is clogged, it may decrease flow out of that pipe. Clean the screen using a small wire brush.

Call a professional plumber if you notice any leaks in your pipes that you cannot repair. Leaks can also affect water volume.
