How to Repair a Zone Valve on an Oil Furnace

Zone valves, which direct hot water to different areas of the home as needed, are common on boilers and oil furnaces. The zone valve is generally located in the piping right above the furnace and runs on approximately 24 volts of power. Over time, the zone valve may wear out or become damaged or broken, which will result in loud noises when heat is transferred through the zones. Replacing the zone valve should be done very carefully and only by an adult to reduce the risk of potential injury.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power and water to that area of the house before attempting to replace the zone valve.

    • 2

Loosen and remove the bolts holding the zone valve power head onto the piping. Older zone valve power heads have four screws, while newer models usually only have two screws.

    • 3

Pull the old zone valve power head off and disconnect the wires from the old power head. Slide the new power head on, and reconnect the wiring. Tighten the screws to attach the power head.

    • 4

Restore power and water and start the furnace back up. Check carefully for leaks, and tighten connections as necessary.
