Tools for a Hydro System Tub Drain

Hydro System designs and manufactures a variety of showers, tubs and whirlpool systems. The tubs are prefabricated and ready for installation over an existing drain. The Hydro System tub drain is installed similar to any other type of tub. Installing the drain requires only a few tools. Proper installation of the drain will ensure there’s no leaks.
  1. Whirlpool System Tub

    • For Hydro System whirlpool tubs, it’s recommended the whirlpool function be tested before installation. This requires using waterproof tape and taping it over the drain hole. The tub should be filled 1 inch above the highest whirlpool jet. The control box is then plugged into an outlet to test the jets. If the jets function properly, the tub can be installed.

    Tools for Installation

    • Installing a tub drain for the Hydro System requires a shower drain connector, plumber’s putty, a rubber washer, a screw driver, adapter ring, needle nose pliers, a rag and a finish plate with a strainer. The drain connector, rubber washer and adapter ring should all be the appropriate size to fit the drain pipe under the tub.

    Preparation

    • Before installing the new tub and drain, remove all the old drain fixtures from the old tub and drain pipe. The drain pipe should be exposed and the tub is installed over the exposed drain pipe. After the tub is installed and the mortar has cured, the drain can be installed.

    How to Install

    • Many plumbing fixture manufactures offer a drain plumbing kit and provide all the parts for installation, including a small metal tool to tighten the adapter ring. To install the drain, put a ring of plumber’s putty around the drain connector. Connect the drain connector to the hole in the base of the tub. Put the rubber washer around the drain pipe and press it down into the drain using your hands. Use a flathead screwdriver to push the rubber washer in securely around the drain pipe. Put the adapter ring with the slots facing up into the drain. Put a rag in the drain hole so nothing falls into the drain hole during installation. Screw the adapter ring in following the threads on drain connector. Use the small metal tool to tighten the adapter ring. Put a flathead screwdriver in the hole of the small metal tool to assist the tool to tighten the adapter ring securely. Remove the rag from the drain hole and use it to wipe away excess plumbers putty around the shower drain. Put the finishing plate with the strainer on top of the drain connector.
