Turn off the electrical power to your boiler by disconnecting the power supply and shutting off the circuit breaker.
Shut off your cold water supply and open a hot water tap. The open tap relieves air pressure inside the water tank, allowing for better water flow when it's draining.
Attach a garden hose to the water drain valve and open the valve. Ensure your garden hose’s opening is outside of the house or someplace that can handle draining water. Close the drain valve when the tank is completely empty.
Open the heating element access area and use your Phillips screwdriver to disconnect the electrical wiring from the element’s terminals.
Unscrew the heating element with your socket wrench and scrub the threads with a toothbrush. If your heating element is installed with a steel plate and bolts, remove the bolts with your screwdriver.
Install the new heating element in reverse order of steps 4 and 5.
Close the water drain valve. Ensure a hot water valve is still open, then open the cold water inlet valve to re-fill your water tank.
Repeat steps 1 through 3 of the “Replace Heating Element” section.
Close the drain valve and disconnect the garden hose. Place a 5-gallon bucket underneath the valve.
Open the cold water supply valve and monitor the water coming out of the drain. Shut off the valve when the bucket is full and check the water for debris or dirt. Empty the bucket and repeat the process until the water is clean.
