Repair Couplings for a Transite Irrigation Pipe

Transite pipes are cement pipes that contain asbestos or other types of insulation. The addition of insulation to the cement makes the pipes stronger and longer-lasting. These pipes are typically used in irrigation applications or in older homes for waste lines. Like any other type of pipe, transite pipes can develop cracks or breaks over time, which can be repaired using a coupler. Adding a coupler to transite pipes allows you to repair the damaged section of pipe without having to dig up and replace the entire pipe, which can require special permits or equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the water to the irrigation system by turning the ball valve on the main water supply line.

    • 2

Remove the dirt from around the area of the broken or leaking transite pipe, using a shovel. Expose the problem area, as well as 2 feet in each direction of the pipe.

    • 3

Open a concrete repair coupler that matches the diameter of the pipe.

    • 4

Wrap the repair coupler around the transite pipe on the area of the break or leak. Position the rubber gasket on the inside of the coupler so that it covers the area of the leak.

    • 5

Bring the edges of the repair coupler together and tighten the series of screws on the side using a screwdriver. Continue tightening each screw until the coupler is very tight against the body of the pipe. The pressure on the gasket is what will seal the leak.

    • 6

Turn on the flow of water to the irrigation pipe and check the seals around the repair coupler for signs of dripping water. If there are drips, continue tightening the screws on the coupler until the drips stop.

    • 7

Replace the dirt around the pipe.
