How to Connect Stand-Alone Irrigation Controllers

Stand-alone irrigation controllers are centralized units that do not interface with a network or require manual activation. Instead, a stand-alone irrigation system communicates automatically with a set of sprinkler valves by sending an electrical signal through a series of copper wires to the small electric plunger inside each valve. When the signal is sent, the plungers activate and release water into individual irrigation zones. Connecting irrigation controllers requires only a few tools and a basic knowledge about electrical systems.

  1. Connecting the Power Supply

      Make sure the AC power adapter is not plugged in.

      Open the access panel on the side or bottom of the irrigation controller. This will expose a set of connection screws.

      Place the ends of the wires from the AC adapter in the teeth of a wire stripping tool and pull off 1 inch of insulation if the wires are not already exposed.

      Place the stripped end of the red wire that's attached to the AC power adapter into the screw marked "+" or "positive." This is the positive power attachment port. Tighten the screw with the wire under it.

      Place the stripped end of the white wire that's attached to the AC power adapter into the screw marked "-" or "negative." This is the negative power attachment port. Tighten the screw with the wire under it. The AC adapter is now connected to the controller.

    Connecting the Irrigation Valve Control Wires

      Go to the sprinkler valve control box and lift up on the lid to expose the valves.

      Note the position of each colored wire. Each color represents the positive connection for one sprinkler valve. For example, if the red wire is attached to the first sprinkler valve, the red wire at the controller should be connected to the first slot.

      Go to the irrigation controller and insert the ends of the colored wires into the numbered slots based on the order in which they were installed on the valves. For example, if the red wire was first, followed by yellow and brown wires, the order in the controller should also go red, yellow, brown.

      Tighten the screws on each of the numbered slots to secure the wires.

      Turn the irrigation controller to the "test" position to test each connection by running each zone for about 1 minute.
