DIY Tankless Dual-Flush Toilets

Unlike conventional toilets, which power their flush by gravity, tankless toilets use a small electric motor to power water through the bowl after a flush. Dual-flush tankless toilets allow the operator to choose between two amounts of water for a flush, helping to conserve water. The average do-it-yourselfer can install one of these toilets on her own, provided she is comfortable with wiring safety and techniques.

Instructions

  1. Installing an Electrical Outlet

    • 1

Turn off the breaker that controls the electricity in the bathroom at the main circuit breaker.

    • 2

Remove the plate of an electrical plug in the bathroom. Use a screwdriver to loosen the socket from the receptacle.

    • 3

Carefully map the route from the current switch location to the spot for the new plug. This involves determining the direction that the wiring will have to follow through the wall cavity. Draw a path on the wall with a construction crayon to help visualize the route. Once you've picked a spot for the plug, use a stud detector to locate the studs on either side. Use a keyhole saw to remove a small, 2-by-2-inch square on each side of the stud. Attach a spade bit to a drill and drill through the studs. Use fishing tape to feed the wire from the current electrical box to the space for the new plug.

    • 4

Connect the white wire to the terminal marked neutral, the black wire to the terminal marked hot, and the copper wire to the green grounding screw on the original plug.

    • 5

Pull the free end of the wire through an outlet box. Mount the outlet box in the toilet location and secure by tightening the screws. Install a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet in this location by connecting the wires to the terminals on the side as you did with the original plug.

    • 6

Gently squeeze both the old and new outlets into the mounting boxes and secure with screws. Replace the faceplates.

    Installing the Tankless Toilet

    • 7

Turn off the main water supply for the house or residence at the main water supply valve. These are usually located in a front or side yard.

    • 8

Press a wax ring into place around the flange opening. Slip two flange bolts, with the threads pointing upward, onto the slots on the side of the flange.

    • 9

Lower the bottom half of the tankless toilet over the flange. Press into place to compact the wax ring. Drop washers and flange nuts over the flange bolts. Tighten with a wrench.

    • 10

Wrap the inlet threads on the toilet and the outlet threads on the wall pipe with plumber's tape. Connect the coupling of a water supply hose to the water outlet in the wall. Connect the other end to the inlet on the toilet.

    • 11

Plug the wire from the toilet into the GFCI outlet.

    • 12

Slip the collar over the top of the toilet. Secure in place with screws.

    • 13

Restore the water supply. Turn on the electricity for the bathroom at the main circuit breaker.
