How to Remove an Above Ground Well Pump and Install a Submersible Pump

Submersible well pumps sit completely underwater and have an intake, electric motor and pump in one unit. These types of well pumps work well in a variety of applications, including pumping water from a creek, lake or standard well shaft. Submersible pumps push water out of wells rather than pull it, and are designed to fit in tight spaces. Removing an above-ground well and replacing it with a submersible pump requires only a few tools and a basic knowledge about well pump systems.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power source from the above-ground well.

    • 2

Remove any bolts holding the pump in place using a socket wrench. The bolts are generallyalong the frame of the pump against the floor or mounting surface.

    • 3

Unscrew the nuts around the inlet and outlet ports on the sides of the pump. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen tight connections.

    • 4

Remove the pump from the platform.

    • 5

Pull out the supply pipe from inside the shaft of the well. If the pipe is anchored to the side of the well wall, remove any bolts or pipe straps prior to pulling the pipe out of the well.

    • 6

Unscrew the filter from the bottom of the pipe that was in the well. Since the pipe is already the correct length and has check valves installed, there is no need to use a new pipe unless the old pipe is corroded. Thread the bottom of the well pipe into the outlet on the well pump. Turn the pipe clockwise until tight.

    • 7

Unroll the electrical wiring on the pump and set the wiring on the ground.

    • 8

Slowly thread the pump and the attached pipe down the well shaft. Allow the electrical cables to unfurl and follow the pipe as it moves down the shaft.

    • 9

Connect the outlet on the top of the well pipe with the inlet on the pressure storage tank by turning the nut on the supply pipe clockwise into the storage tank.

    • 10

Connect the electrical wiring for the submersible pump to the control box or outlet as defined by the wiring diagram on the inside of the control box.
