How to Pipe a Sprinkler Well System

Sprinklers that aren't near a municipal water supply often rely on well water. Well water can also supplement municipal water on farms or other large properties where tapping wells can save money on water bills. Well-water sprinkler systems are similar to those tied to municipal systems, but they involve the added steps of connecting pipes to the well pump and a pressurized storage tank. Piping your sprinkler well system requires a general knowledge of irrigation systems.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Find the discharge arm on the side of the well pump. Insert a 12-inch section of PVC pipe with a threaded end into the opening on the discharge port. Turn the pipe clockwise with an adjustable wrench until tight.

    • 2

Swab the end inside of the slip end of a male adapter fitting with PVC primer to prepare the surface for bonding. Swab the inside of the fitting with a layer of PVC cement and press the fitting onto the end of the pipe.

    • 3

Thread a PVC shutoff valve onto the male fitting and turn the valve clockwise until tight.

    • 4

Thread another male fitting into the other side of the shutoff valve and turn clockwise until tight.

    • 5

Swab the inside of the male fitting with PVC primer and cement, and then press a 12-inch section of pipe into the fitting.

    • 6

Thread another male fitting into the side of the pressure holding tank and turn clockwise until tight. Move the tank next to the pipe that's connected to the well pump and swab the inside of the slip end of the fitting connected to the tank with PVC primer and cement. Press the fitting in the tank over the well pipe to complete the connection between the well pump and the pressure tank.

    • 7

Find the outlet on the side of the pressure tank and thread a male fitting into the port. Turn the fitting clockwise until tight.

    • 8

Swab the inside of the fitting with PVC primer and cement and press the end of the sprinkler manifold intake pipe into the fitting. This will connect the tank to the irrigation control manifold, which releases water from the tank to the sprinkler zones when activated.
