How to Install an Oversized Toilet Bowl Ring

The connection between a toilet and the drainpipe is made with a special fitting called a toilet flange. The flange is cemented onto the drainpipe and bolted to the floor. Closet bolts connect the toilet to the flange, sealed with a ring of beeswax. Usually the top of the flange is above the floor, but after a new flooring installation it may be level with or below the floor's surface, requiring an over-sized ring to bridge the resulting gap.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water supply to the toilet. Flush the toilet to remove most of the water, then use a sponge to remove any remaining water from the toilet tank and bowl.

    • 2

Loosen the nut on the top of the valve that holds the supply line in place, using the wrench. Remove the nut, but leave the line attached to the toilet. Open the caps that hide the closet bolts on either side of the toilet base. Some types require a flathead screwdriver to pry them off.

    • 3

Loosen the nuts on both closet bolts, using the adjustable wrench. Remove the nuts and washers. Lift the toilet off the flange and move it to one side. Roll the rag into a ball and stuff it into the drainpipe to prevent sewer gas from escaping and to keep tools, debris and supplies from falling into the drain. It is not necessary to remove the closet bolts from the flange.

    • 4

Remove the old wax ring from the flange and the toilet, using the putty knife. Inspect the flange and the lag bolts that hold it to the subfloor. Ensure the flange is unbroken and firmly fastened to the subfloor.

    • 5

Remove the protective plastic cover from the over-sized wax ring. Place the new, over-sized wax ring over the toilet drain with the rounded edge against the toilet. Apply just enough pressure to hold it in place. Do not to deform the ring.

    • 6

Mold a small amount of plumbers putty around the closet bolts to hold them straight up and down. Remove the rag from the drain. Lift the toilet over the flange and lower it down so that the two closet bolts fit through the holes in the toilet base. Apply pressure on the left and right sides of the toilet's rim to seat the toilet and ring firmly onto the flange.

Place the washers and nuts on the closet bolts and hand-tighten the nuts. Continue to tighten the nuts with the wrench to make them snug, but do not overtighten. Replace the closet bolt caps and reconnect the supply line. Hand-tighten it first, then tighten it one-half turn, using the wrench. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks.
