How to Install a Bathroom Faucet With a Butterfly Valve

Butterfly valves are named after the round, circular plate they use to control the flow of liquids through pipes. Typically these valves are found in faucets for industrial applications. They are also used on faucets with extra long handles, such as machine shops and operating facilities. Because the butterfly valve is inside the faucet body, installing these types of faucets isn't any different than installing a standard bathroom faucet.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic putty knife
  • Plumber's putty
  • Wrench (if needed)
  • Plumber's tape

Instructions

    • 1

Use a plastic putty knife to scrape off any caulk or putty from around the faucet openings on the sink.

    • 2

Remove the wing nuts from the underside of the butterfly valve faucet.

    • 3

Turn the faucet over so you can see the underside. Roll out a wad of plumber's putty, about 1/2 inch thick. When the putty reaches about a foot in length, press it into the cavity on the underside of the faucet. This will help seal and stabilize the fixture.

    • 4

Flip the faucet right side up. Lower the faucet onto the sink surface so that the hot and cold inlets line up with the holes in the sink body.

    • 5

Move underneath the sink. Screw the wing nuts onto the bottom of the sink on both the hot and cold inlets until the faucet is secure.

    • 6

Wrap the hot water inlet with plumber's tape. Secure the loose end of the hot water supply coupling around the inlet. Tighten hand tight. Repeat the process for the cold water supply line.

    • 7

Turn on both the hot and cold water supply lines. Open up the butterfly faucet valve and check that the water flows out at an even pace and doesn't leak from the hoses beneath. Tighten any couplings, if needed.
