How to Add a Sink to a Toilet

The easiest way to save water is to use it twice, and toilet tank sink converters provide a simple way to divert the hygienically safe water left over from hand washing -- known as gray water -- to a second use in the toilet bowl. This easy-to-use approach provides the environmental advantage of conserving hundreds of gallons of water each year. These converters are also space saving, and they can help homeowners convert small nooks and closets into compact half bathrooms.

Things You'll Need

  • Toilet tank sink converter kit

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the shut-off valve under the toilet tank and turn off the water. Remove the lid from the tank and set it aside for storage.

    • 2

Pull the plastic water supply tubing off the overflow pipe -- which is the tall metal tube that extends to the bottom of the tank -- then remove the other end of the tube from the toilet's fill valve.

    • 3

Attach one end of the supplied plastic water supply tube from the converter kit to the toilet's fill valve. Attach the other end to the faucet's inlet fitting, which is located underneath the kit's main converter section, on the left side. Attach the black drainage tube from the kit to the converter section's drain. There are no tools required; simply push each flexible tube into place around the appropriate fitting.

    • 4

Insert the drainage tube into the overflow pipe. Gently position the kit's sink converter into place on top of the tank.

    • 5

Slide the sink converter's lid adapter into place on the right side of the sink until it completely covers the tank without any overhang.

    • 6

Turn on the water. Fresh water will flow from the faucet each time the toilet is flushed, filling the tank through the sink's drain. The water will continue flowing until the toilet is completely filled.
