How to Install a Bulkhead Fitting for Pond Plumbing

Bulkhead fittings are used to connect a ball valve or pipe to a container that does not have pipe threads already installed. The bulkhead uses compression to press two sides of the fitting together from the inside and outside of the container. This is especially helpful in pond plumbing, as the bulkhead allows you to connect a discharge or supply pipe to the side of the pond liner or a filter box. No matter what the purpose, the bulkhead installs the same.

Things You'll Need

  • Pen or chalk
  • Hole saw
  • Drill
  • Adjustable wrench

Instructions

    • 1

Decide where you want to install the bulkhead fitting. Mark the location with a pen or chalk.

    • 2

Decide what size bulkhead is needed. Bulkheads come in a variety of sizes, from one-half inch to several inches. Choose the size that matches the pipe size that you want to use. For example, if the project calls for half-inch pipe, use a half-inch bulkhead.

    • 3

Attach a hole saw that matches the diameter of the bulkhead and bore out a hole where you marked the container.

    • 4

Place the outlet of the bulkhead through the outside of the hole. Make sure the washer is pressed firmly against the container. Reach in with your other hand and place the second washer and the retaining nut around the threads of the bulkhead.

    • 5

Turn the nut onto the bulkhead fitting by hand until tight. Turn the nut an additional two rotations with an adjustable wrench until secure. The bulkhead is now ready to receive pipes or other attachments as needed.
