How to Switch a Flushometer Toilet to a Tank Toilet

Flushometer toilets are different from standard tank toilets in that they rely on running water to flush the bowl instead of water that's released from a tank on the back. Switching out a Flushometer toilet for a standard tank unit requires you to convert the inlet valve to a standard tank line, and place the new toilet over the outlet using a new wax ring. Once installed, the tank toilet will operate like any other tank unit but use the old wall inlet for the water supply.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Towel
  • Putty knife
  • Wax ring
  • Plumber's tape
  • 1/2-inch female to 3/8-inch male fitting
  • 3/8-inch braided toilet supply line

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the water shutoff valve on the main water line 90 degrees clockwise to turn off the flow of water to the entire house while you work.

    • 2

Place an adjustable wrench on the nut to the left of the control stop on the Flushometer toilet. Turn the nut counterclockwise until the nut pulls free from the control stop.

    • 3

Wrap the control stop in a towel to prevent marring and place the wrench around the control stop. Turn the entire control stop counterclockwise until it pulls free from the wall.

    • 4

Remove the two retaining bolts on the base of the toilet and lift the toilet off of the flange.

    • 5

Scrape away the old wax ring using a flat putty knife.

    • 6

Place a new wax ring over the flange.

    • 7

Wrap the exposed pipe threads on the supply line where the Flushometer toilet was installed with plumber's tape. This will lubricate and seal the threads.

    • 8

Place a 1/2-inch female to 3/8-inch male fitting over the pipe. This will convert the supply line to a standard toilet valve.

    • 9

Place one end of a 3/8-inch braided toilet supply line over the male fitting. This line will run to the new toilet's inlet valve.

    • 10

Position the new tank toilet over the wax ring and firmly press it into place. Do not rock the toilet as you press down, however.

    • 11

Tighten the bolts on the base of the toilet until the unit is securely in place.

    • 12

Run the other side of the toilet supply line to the inlet valve on the base of the toilet tank. Turn the nut on the supply line clockwise with a wrench until tight.

    • 13

Turn on the main water valve and wait for the new toilet to fill with water before using.
