How to Install a Compression Fitting on a Washing Machine Drain

A compression fitting is an excellent method of repairing damaged drainage pipes on a washing machine. After cutting out the damaged section from the drain pipe, it is important to fit a watertight connection between the existing pipe and the new pipework that will replace the damaged part. This is best done by screwing the two halves of a compression joint onto the ends of the pipes, then screwing the pipes together using a pair of spanners to maintain a good grip. The result is a watertight seal between the old and new piping, so your washing machine can drain water without leaking.

Things You'll Need

  • Hacksaw
  • Replacement pipe section
  • Steel wool
  • 2 spanners
  • 2 compression joints

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the damaged section on the washing machine drain pipe. Cut through the pipe 2 inches from either end of the damage, using a hacksaw. Straighten the ends of the pipes using the hacksaw.

    • 2

Cut a piece of pipe as long as the gap in the drain pipe, using the hacksaw. Clean the ends of this pipe and the cut ends of the drain pipe with steel wool, to remove any dirt and debris, as this will interfere with creating a solid joint.

Sit the ferrule, a circular clamp that is part of the compression fitting, on one end of the drain pipe. Push the ferrule onto the end of the pipe so it fits snugly. Sit the pipe fitting on one end of the new pipe section. Push the fitting onto the pipe until it is snug. Line up the end of the ferrule with the end of the pipe fitting. Push the pipe fitting into the ferrule.

Screw the pipe fitting into the ferrule by hand to establish an initial connection. Place a spanner on the screw nut on both the ferrule and the pipe fitting. Turn one spanner clockwise while holding the other spanner still. This tightens the compression fitting and establishes a watertight seal. Repeat this process to fit a second compression joint on the other end of the drain pipe and replacement pipe section.
