How to Attach a Shower Valve Core to a Frame

Behind the shower wall, the heart of the shower is hard at work mixing the perfect combination of hot and cold water for delivery to the shower head. When you turn a valve on the shower to start the water, the interior of the valve in the shower core opens inside the corresponding water pipe to let water flow through to the shower head. The valves attached to the shower valve core are constantly pulled and moved. For safety, the shower valve core should be secured to the framing inside the walls, which also frames the shower. Attach the shower valve core while installing the rest of the plumbing for the shower.

Things You'll Need

  • 2-by-4 board
  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Four 2-inch wood screws
  • 3 pipe hangers

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 2-by-4 board to fit in between the studs at the level of the shower valve core. This is the support cleat.

Position the support board behind the valve core. Have a second person hold it in place while you screw two 2-inch wood screws through the studs on either side of the support cleat and into the cleat. You use a total of four wood screws to attach the cleat to the studs.

Place one pipe hanger around the hot water pipe as it enters the valve control. Screw the pipe hanger into the support cleat with the screws included with the hanger.

    • 4

Attach a second pipe hanger around the cold water supply pipe by screwing it into the support cleat.
