How to Install a Drain Pipe Behind a Blocked Wall

Concrete block walls, frequently used as foundation walls or retaining walls, perform important functions for many homeowners. However, such walls may suffer significant damage if water collects around and penetrates their surfaces. A proven method to direct excess water away from block walls involves using a system called a drain tile or French drain. These systems typically incorporate plastic pipe to run water away from the blocks, preventing any dangerous accumulation of moisture.

Things You'll Need

  • Shovel
  • Earth mover
  • PVC pipe
  • Roofing felt
  • Gravel
  • Waterproof fabric

Instructions

    • 1

Target an exit point for your drain tile that will let the water run to a sewer drain.

    • 2

Take a shovel and dig a 6-inch-wide trench along the wall. Grade the trench so it slopes 1 inch every 12 feet. Grade with earth-moving equipment or manually with a shovel. Ensure that the beginning point where water enters the drain tile is the highest point.

    • 3

Place the sections of tile in the trench starting at the end opposite where the water will exit. Ensure that a 1-inch gap exists between the sections.

    • 4

Cut out two sections of roofing felt large enough to comfortably cover the gap between the pipe sections. Place the pieces over the gap, one on top of the other. Repeat the steps for the length of the wall and to your termination point.

    • 5

Place 6 to 8 inches of gravel over the sections. Apply waterproof fabric over the gravel along the length of the drainpipe.

    • 6

Backfiil the soil over the drain.
