How to Attach a Pressure Switch to Plumbing

Pressure switches are used to control water flow in plumbing. A common use for these types of switches is in houses that have a well drawn water supply. These switches are controlled by electricity from the main breaker in the installed location. Attaching a pressure switch to plumbing can be done by the DIYer with some knowledge of plumbing who is ready to take on a new challenge.

Things You'll Need

  • Hacksaw
  • Rotary cutting tool
  • Sandpaper
  • Flux
  • Solder
  • Plumber's torch
  • Plumbing tee
  • Copper pipe
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire strippers

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water supply for the pipe where you will be attaching the pressure switch.

    • 2

Run lines from a breaker for the electrical supply. This will either be a 110- or 220-volt breaker, depending on the needs of your pressure switch.

    • 3

Cut the pipe apart, if needed, at the point you want to add the pressure switch, with a hacksaw or rotary cutting tool. Sand down any rough edges lightly with sandpaper.

    • 4

Apply flux to the end of the pipe and the inside of a tee fitting. Slip the tee fitting over the end of the pipe. Make sure that the free end of the tee is pointing upward so you can mount the pressure switch on top. Secure in place with solder by heating it with a plumber's torch. Repeat the process for the opposite side of the pipe.

    • 5

Apply pipe tape to the end of a few inches of straight pipe fitting (the length will depend on the area where you are installing) and screw it into the top of the tee. Wrap the top threads on the pipe in the same manner. Screw the pressure switch onto the top of the pipe.

    • 6

Loosen the terminals on the top of the pressure switch with a screwdriver. Connect the wiring from the breaker switch. Follow the manuals from your manufacturer on the correct connection terminals for the wires, as they will differ with models of switches and voltages used.

    • 7

Place the cap on top of the pressure switch and secure.

    • 8

Restore the water supply. Check around the plumbing for leaks. Turn on the electrical supply for the pressure switch.
