How to Paint Interior Doors Like a Pro

A fresh coat of paint in an attractive color will enhance any room. You don't need to hire a professional to paint your interior doors. With the right supplies, instructions and initiative you can repaint your own doors. Plan on allowing three days for the project so that you can take your time and do the job right.   • Screwdriver
  • Sandwich bags
  • Newspaper or painter's cloth
  • Two sawhorses
  • Kitchen sponge
  • Lint-free cloth
  • Paint brush

Instructions

      Remove the doorknob and all accompanying hardware. Place in a sandwich bag, label and put in a safe place.

      Use a screwdriver to remove the door from the hinges. Place all screws in a sandwich bag, label and put in a safe place.

      Lay newspaper or a painter's cloth on the floor where you will be working. Set up a pair of sawhorses and place the door across them.

      Wet a kitchen sponge with water and wipe the door clean. Clean along the edges and in the openings where the hardware belongs. Dry with a clean lint-free rag.

      Brush on a white acrylic primer. Start with the edges and then prime the door surface. Work top to bottom following the direction of the grain. Allow to dry overnight.

      Paint the edges of your door first. Then start in the top corner of the door surface. Use up and down brush strokes following the direction of the grain. Allow to dry. Apply a second coat of paint if desired.

      Turn the door over and repeat the primer then painting process. Re-hang the door and attach the doorknob.
