Directions for an Electric Paint Sprayer

An electric paint sprayer is a handy, quick tool to cover vast amounts of area with even, vibrant paint without having to use messy rollers and brushes. On large projects, its advantages surely outweigh its negatives. One of those negatives is that it can be difficult to set up and use if you've never used one before. With some quick instructions, though, you should be on your way to mastering it.
  1. Set Up

    • The instructions for using an electric paint sprayer can be complicated and long, but if you break it up, it turns out to be many easy, common-sense steps. For this, you don't need anything but a wrench, an outlet, paint and the equipment that came with the painter. First, connect the hose and the gun to the machine. To do this, remove the plastic cap plug from the outlet nipple. Screw a fluid hose onto the now-exposed nipple (use at least a 50 ft hose to get a full range of mobility). Connect the 3-foot whip hose and flex gun by screwing it into the fluid hose. Make sure to not use thread sealant. Next, fill the packing nut/wetcup, which is at the top of the machine. Fill it one-third full with TSL (throat seal liquid). Plug in the sprayer and flush the pump if needed. Flushing the pump is just a way to get rid of oil that has built up inside the machine and is described in the owner's manual. It's not necessary but recommended.

    Prepare to Paint

    • First, prepare the paint. Stir it generously and then strain it, if you think it's necessary. Make sure that the top layer of skin is off, at the very least. The reason for straining it is to get rid of any lumps or impurities in the paint that may clog up the machine. It's recommended but not necessary. Pour the paint into the paint pail and place the paint pail under the suction tube of the paint sprayer. You can also hang the pail from the pail hanger, which is above the suction tube. Turn the pressure adjusting knob all the way counterclockwise to lower the pressure. The knob can be found on the top of the electrical box on the sprayer. Disengage the trigger guard on the flex gun (Make sure that the spray tip on the gun is still not connected). Place the metal part of the gun against a metal waste pail and press the trigger. This will get all the air out of the system, and will show you when the paint is spraying out properly. Let go of the trigger and lock it again. After it's locked, install the spray tip and tip guard on the flex gun. You are ready to paint.

    Painting

    • Disengage the trigger lock and pull the trigger while pointing at what you want to paint. You may have to adjust the pressure and direction of the spray throughout your project. Spray by moving the gun back and forth. Add as many coats as you need. Once you have finished painting, engage the trigger lock and clean the machine as per the manual. You should take the paint pail off, flush the system of any leftover paint, lubricate parts and add more TSL if needed.
