The Best Way to Refinish a Bathtub

If your bathtub has seen better days or you've picked up an antique claw-footed tub at an antique store that needs some work, do the refinishing yourself. Although you'll need to use some harsh chemicals in the process, following some common sense safety precautions will have your tub looking like new in a couple of days.
  1. Getting Started

    • Purchase or rent a high-volume, low-pressure spray gun and respirator or face mask to protect you from fumes from the chemicals generally used in refinishing a bathtub.

Also purchase a palm sander and sandpaper, masking tape and paper. Use chemicals such as epoxy paint or primer to use in the spray gun, such as EP-acrylic topcoat, chemical cleaners and bonding agent for porcelain and tile, according Bob Vila. ear protective clothing such as coveralls, gloves and safety goggles.

Ventilate your workspace by opening windows and doors. If working in the bathroom, cover mirrors and faucets with paper.

To help protect your drain and lever from paint or epoxy, remove them before refinishing. Also remove old caulking around the tub and apply new caulking after you've completed the refinishing. Cover other fixtures on your bathroom sink and mirrors in your bathroom with paper and tape.

    Cleaning the Bathtub

    • Scrub your bathtub with a cleanser and a scrubber. Use a razor blade to scrape off soap deposits. After cleaning, use a heavy-duty industrial cleaner to clean the bathtub of soap scum, oil, stains and rust areas, then let dry, according to Repair Home.com.

Next, sand the tub with a palm sander or with 220-grit sandpaper. A palm sander works best because the vibration from the sander provides an even surface. Sanding helps you rough up the surface of the tub to allow it to bond with the acrylic paint. For porcelain or tile bathtubs, apply a chemical bonding agent or adhesive to the tub. Use a paper towel or spray bottle to apply a chemical adhesive. Let the adhesive set for at least five minutes.

    Painting

    • Use EP-Acrylic Polymer coating, a durable and strong finish that comes in a variety of colors to go with your bathroom decor. Use a gloss polymer to provide a high shine.

To ensure an even coating, go back and forth with your paint sprayer and release the trigger of your spray gun when you reach the edge of the surface to keep the paint from dripping. Use at least two coats of primer before applying your acrylic topcoat.
