How to Apply Painter's Tape on Window Glass

When you are painting the trim around windows, it's imperative to protect the window glass from the paint as you apply it. The standard way to protect window glass during the painting process is to apply painter’s tape on the window glass. Once you have securely applied the painter’s tape to the window glass, you can then safely paint the woodwork surrounding the window without worry about staining the window glass with paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Tear off a strip of painter’s tape to fit along the vertical edge of the window glass. Estimate the length of painter’s tape you need; cut off the excess after you apply the tape.

    • 2

Position the bottom edge of the painter’s tape so that it is 1/16-inch away from the wood along the bottom of the glass. The side of the painter's tape must also be 1/16-inch away from the wood along the side edge of the glass.

    • 3

Press the painter’s tape along the entire edge; it must adhere to the window glass. When you reach the top of the windowpane, use the X-acto knife to cut off the excess painter’s tape. Continue to leave a 1/16-inch gap between the edge of the painter’s tape and the wood.

    • 4

Run the edge of the putty knife along the entire strip of painter’s tape to ensure a tight seal. The seal must not allow paint to seep under the painter’s tape.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2 through 4 to apply the painter’s tape to all four edges of the windowpane. Apply the painter’s tape in the same fashion to all edges of all of the windowpanes prior to painting the window trim.
