How to Paint a Cast Iron Tub

In general, painting a cast iron bathtub is a challenging undertaking. Your objective in painting is to make the tub look like a brand new bathtub without the expense and construction involved in getting an actual new tub. Painting bath fixtures like sinks and tubs will turn out a lot better when left to a company that specializes in this type of work. However, it certainly can be done by the handy layperson if you are willing to work carefully and take your time.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the tub thoroughly using a non-abrasive cleanser like Softscrub. Don't worry about stains. You will be painting over discolorations. Remove any soap scum and other grime from the inside of the tub.

    • 2

Sand the entire inside and outside of the tub with a palm sander and medium grit sandpaper. A palm sander will give you a much better foundation for the primer than you will be able to achieve by hand sanding the cast iron. Work methodically around the tub to make sure that you sand all parts of the cast iron tub evenly. Wipe out sanding dust with a damp rag.

    • 3

Use a good quality paintbrush to apply epoxy primer to all surfaces on the inside and outside of the tub. Use a steady, even motion to apply the primer without feathering at the end of the brush stroke. Apply one to two coats of primer, allowing each coat to dry before continuing.

Evaluate the primer's finish. Use fine-grit sand paper to smooth out any raised areas or inconsistencies.

    • 5

Apply the acrylic topcoat using the same method you used to apply the primer. Sand out any imperfections with fine grit sand paper.

    • 6

Let the cast iron tub cure for three to five days before filling the tub with water.
