Electric Paint Removal

When repainting walls and other surfaces, you have a choice of several strategies for obtaining good coverage. Many people opt to apply a layer of paint primer and then paint over top the walls. By doing so, however, you create more layers that could leave you seeing cracking and peeling on your newly painted areas in a few months. Instead, choose a paint removal method that actually gets rid of the old paint instead of concealing it.
  1. Electric Paint Removal

    • A few electric tools that are designed to remove paint from walls and other surfaces. An electric heat gun works well and is preferred over a blow torch. To use the heat gun, hold the tool close to the paint so that the heat causes the paint to bubble. You can then remove the bubbled paint with a paint scraper. Some paints do not bubble and using this method may only create a mess, so try testing the electric heat gun on a small area to see how well your paint bubbles.

An electric heat plate works like the heat gun. The heat plate is held close to the painted surface until the heat from the tool causes the layers of paint to soften and blister. You will then need to scrape the paint off with a paint scraper. When using either one of these methods, care should be taken not to touch the coil of the heat plate or gun. The coil is extremely hot, and clothing, fabric and other materials could catch on fire. For safety measures, have a fire extinguisher close at hand.

    Alternative Methods of Paint Removal

    • Other methods of paint removal, including paint strippers, work just as well as using heat. Paint strippers are chemicals commonly used to break down the layers of paint. Strippers are available in liquid, paste, and aerosol forms. Each type of stripper works by applying the chemicals, waiting and then removing the paint stripper with a scraper.

Liquid paint strippers are recommended for removing one to two layers of paint. You apply the stripper to the walls using a brush. If you need to remove paint over a large area, or if you have more than a few layers to remove, then paste strippers are the best option. These products are thicker in consistency and applied using a paint brush. However, if you have a thin layer of paint or a small area, aerosol paint strippers may be the most appropriate choice. They are fast, convenient and work best for smaller jobs.
