How to Adjust Spray Guns

Spray guns have two to three adjustment control knobs to create spray patterns. The adjustments allow the fluid and airflow adjustments in incremental amounts to achieve spray patterns. If the fluid control allows maximum fluid and the air control is set for minimum airflow, the paint will exit the spray gun thickly and heavily. This can cause visible runs in a paint job that require sanding and repainting to correct.

Instructions

  1. Fluid Control Adjustments

    • 1

Turn the fluid control knob--a large, round metal screw on the back of the spray gun--fully in a counterclockwise direction to allow full force flowing of fluids like paint. This allows the internal fluid needle to travel the longest distance possible from the fluid tip with each pull of the trigger.

    • 2

Turn the fluid control knob fully to the right to shut off all flow of liquids from the spray gun when depressing the trigger. Depress the trigger and make a spray pattern on a scrap item.

    • 3

Turn the fluid control to add or decrease fluid level until achieving the correct spray pattern.

    Fan Control Adjustments

    • 4

Turn the fan control knob fully counterclockwise to limit the amount of air intake into the spray gun. This will create a flat spray pattern for painting. The fan control knob generally is on the left side but in some models will be on the right side.

    • 5

Turn the fan control knob clockwise to add the maximum amount of air intake and create a round spray pattern out of the spray gun nozzle.

    • 6

Depress the trigger and test the spray pattern on a scrap item. Turn the knob right to round out a spray pattern and left to flatten a spray pattern.

    Air Micrometer Adjustment

    • 7

Locate the air micrometer adjustment valve on the back of the spray gun. It is a flat knob that turns in a circle. Higher-end spray guns have this type of adjustment, but not all spray guns include it on their models.

    • 8

Turn the knob fully counterclockwise to adjust the air pressure on the spray tip to fully open. This will reduce the loss of air pressure in the spray gun as the air and fluid flow through it and mix when they exit the tip.

    • 9

Turn the knob clockwise to lower the air adjustment.
