Removing paint from metal hardware in your house is important if you want to change the décor of a specific room. Restoring metal to its original finish can add a classy touch to a room not achieved with painted hinges and brackets. Often, metal hardware which is painted chips easily if the type of paint is not optimal for the finish of the metal. Whether you need to strip the paint from a bracket to repaint it or to restore it, there are steps you can take to remove the old paint.
- Crock pot
- 2 tbsp. liquid laundry detergent
- Plastic tongs
- Toothbrush
- Metal polish
- Soft cloth

Put the brackets in a crock pot and cover with warm water. Add 2 tbsp. liquid laundry detergent.

Set the temperature to medium and cover. Let the brackets "cook" overnight.

Remove the brackets from the crock pot with plastic tongs to avoid scratching.

Scrub the loose paint off of the brackets with the toothbrush. As the paint cools, it will be harder to remove. Dip brackets in the warm water as needed to keep the paint soft.

Apply a metal polish with a soft cloth to protect the brackets if you are restoring the metal.
