How to Paint Rusted Railings

Railings are a part of many buildings. These horizontal bars with supporting posts are usually seen on terraces, balconies and walkways. The railings are frequently made of metal and sometimes develop rust. If small areas of rust are not removed, the rust continues to spread. Cleaning the railing and removing the rust is necessary before painting. Fortunately, removing rust from railings is a simple task, especially in the beginning stages of rust.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrub away rust on the railings with a steel wool pad. This process removes surface rust.

    • 2

Apply rust remover to the railings with a steel wool pad. Rub the rust remover into the railing. Leave on for 10 to 20 minutes or the length of time indicated on the rust remover label. Follow the directions carefully to avoid injury. Rust removers contain toxic substances like phosphoric acid.

    • 3

Wipe away the rust remover with a rag or paper towels. Stubborn rust stains should be gone. If not, reapply rust remover and leave on for a longer period.

    • 4

Dampen paper towels and wipe the railing clean to remove all traces of the rust remover. Dry the railing with paper towels.

    • 5

Apply a rust-inhibiting primer with a paintbrush. Let dry.

    • 6

Apply a rust-inhibiting paint with a paintbrush. Let dry. Apply a second coat if needed. The paint adds an additonal level of protection against rust.
