How to Paint an Extension Pole

Painting an extension pole requires special preparation. Extension poles are made of plastic, fiberglass or metal---surfaces ill-suited for paint adhesion. Painting directly on these surfaces will result in shedding. You must pre-treat each surface and also apply the paint in a particular manner so the finish is not flawed.

Things You'll Need

  • Dish soap
  • Coarse sponge
  • Water hose
  • 180-grit sandpaper
  • Masking paper
  • Professional painter's tape
  • Heavy-duty fabric drop cloth
  • Acrylic spray primer
  • Galvanized metal etching spray primer
  • Acrylic spray enamel

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the base portion of the extension pole with ordinary dish soap, using a coarse sponge. Rinse the pole, using a water hose, and allow it to dry in the sun for 1 to 2 hours.

    • 2

Abrade the base portion of plastic or fiberglass extension poles to promote adhesion. Sand the pole until it feels slightly gritty. Skip this step if the base of the extension pole is metal.

    • 3

Extend the pole. Cover the extended portion, adjacent to the base, with masking paper and painter's tape. Place the pole on a drop cloth.

    • 4

Coat the base portion of plastic and fiberglass poles with acrylic spray primer. Use a metal etching spray primer on metallic poles. Maintain an 8-inch distance between the extension pole and the spray nozzle as you apply. Wait 3 hours for the primer to dry.

    • 5

Coat the primed extension pole with acrylic spray enamel. Maintain an 8-inch distance between the extension pole and the spray nozzle as you apply. Wait 4 hours before using the extension pole.
