How to Use Deck Paint on LP Siding

LP siding is a building material manufactured by Louisiana-Pacific. This particular siding is an engineered surface composed of wood particles bound together by a resin. If you would like to finish your LP siding with deck paint, you can, because deck paint is a durable acrylic, well-suited for exterior conditions. Unfortunately, like other brands of engineered wood paneling, LP siding is ill-suited for paint adhesion. Combat this potential dilemma by pre-treating the siding with a particular type of primer. Apply each coating in a particular manner, using the right tools, or the final finish could end up flawed.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the Louisiana-Pacific siding, using a pressure washer fitted with a low-pressure tip. Wait a full day for the LP siding to dry.

    • 2

Place drop cloths on the ground. Protect areas adjacent to the engineered siding by covering them with painter's tape.

    • 3

Apply acrylic latex primer to a 3-foot-wide area of the Louisiana-Pacific siding, using a roller stocked with a 1-inch nap cover. Promote a flawless, slick finish by smoothing the wet primer within this area, using a polyester paintbrush. Brush vertically and apply gentle pressure. Continue until all of the LP siding is primed. Wait two hours for the primer to dry.

    • 4

      Wash each tool with water.

    • 5

Paint the Louisiana-Pacific siding just as you primed it. Use a new roller cover. Wait two hours for the deck paint to dry.
