How to Remove Cracked Interior Paint

When your interior paint begins to crack it can ruin the pristine look of your painted walls and interior surfaces. To fix it, you’ll need to remove the cracked paint and reapply it. Removing cracked paint will take a few minutes to several hours depending on how cracked the paint is and how large of an area has the cracked paint. Never paint over cracked paint, as you will be unable to get a smooth finish and the paint will simply continue to crack in the same area.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a drop cloth on the floor under the area where you will be removing the cracked paint.

    • 2

Tape the drop cloth to the floor so it doesn’t move while you are working.

    • 3

Scrape off the large cracked pieces with the edge of a paint scraper. Apply even pressure and hold the blade flat against the wall or painted surface at all times. Scrape horizontally vertically and diagonally from several different directions to make sure you are removing as much of the cracked paint as possible.

    • 4

Gently sand the rest of the area with 12-grit sandpaper. If you are sanding wood that has a wood grain, work in the direction of the wood grain until you’ve removed the rest of the paint.

    • 5

      Wipe off the sawdust.

    • 6

Remove the drop cloth and shake it over a trash can to throw away the paint scrapings.
