How to Paint a Coved Ceiling Edge

A coved ceiling is a curved ceiling that has an inset section often delineated by molding or other decorative elements. The curved area between the ceiling and walls can add a touch of elegance to the room, as well as make the room appear larger than its square footage. When painting a coved ceiling edge, protect the molding and paint the ceiling carefully so that you don't accidentally get paint on the molding.

Instructions

  1. Ceiling with Molding

    • 1

Move the furniture to a different room or to the center of the room. Cover the floor and all furniture left in the room with drop cloths.

    • 2

Place blue painter's tape along the edges of the molding. It will protect the molding.

    • 3

Apply paint along the edge of the coved ceiling with a paintbrush. This task is called "cutting in." Apply the paint with smooth, broad strokes, working parallel to the molding.

    Ceiling without Molding

    • 4

Move the furniture to a different room or to the center of the room.

    • 5

Cover the floor and all furniture remaining in the room with drop cloths.

    • 6

Apply paint to the curved area where the wall and ceiling meet with a paint roller attached to an extension pole. Cover an area of about 3 square feet before painting a different area, and apply the paint with a motion that makes the letter "W" followed by a motion that makes the letter "M" to cover the entire section.
