DIY How to Rubber-Coat Steel Rods

Steel rods that are exposed to moisture and the elements will start rusting over time. If you do not stop or prevent the rust from occurring on the steel rod, it will weaken structurally and can fail. While many people choose to just paint the steel rods, paint might not be the best solution in many cases. Applying a protective rubber coating is the most effective and longest lasting solution to prevent steel rods from rusting.

Brush clean the steel rod with the paint brush. Make sure the paint brush is dry and clean before cleaning the rod. Brush off any loose dust and debris on the steel rod.

    • 2

Paint or dip the steel rod into the rubber coating can. If your steel rod can be removed and dipped, then dip it in the can of coating. If it cannot be removed, apply a thick coat of rubber coating with the paint brush. Let the first coat dry for 12 hours.

Apply the remaining coats of rubber coating. If you are painting it with the paint brush, apply a total of three or four coats, depending on the desired thickness. If you are dipping it, you just need two dip coats. Let the steel rod dry for at least four hours between each coat.
