How to Fix Bubbled Paint in an Interior

Bubbled paint, also known as paint blistering, occurs for a variety of reasons, including improper surface preparation, wet surfaces or high heat and humidity during paint application. Painting a wet or damp wall interrupts adhesion and causes the paint to lift after the paint dries, leaving blisterlike patches on the wall. Applying paint to a wall when the temperature is high causes the paint to dry from the outside in and leaves paint bubbles on the surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap a piece of 220-grit sandpaper around a sanding block. Sand the paint bubbles off the wall after the paint is dry. Continue to sand the wall until you expose the bare substrate.

    • 2

Wipe the wall with a dry rag to remove bits of paint.

    • 3

Pour interior-grade paint primer into a paint tray or paint bucket.

    • 4

Dip a paintbrush or paint roller in the primer. Paint a thin coat of paint primer over the sanded area and let it dry for two to four hours.

    • 5

Wash the paint tray with water to remove the primer.

    • 6

Pour interior-grade paint into the paint tray or paint bucket.

    • 7

Roll a paint roller through the wall color paint or pick up paint on a paintbrush and apply a light, even coat over the primer. Allow the first coat of paint to dry for two to four hours. Paint a second coat of paint over the first coat with a brush or roller.
