How to Blow Ceiling Paint

Traditional paint rollers and brushes are difficult to use on popcorn-style ceilings, and can cause the texture to flake off. Homeowners can avoid these problems, however, by blowing paint on with a paint sprayer. Paint sprayers blow paint into crevices to ensure an even application with minimal damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the room for painting. Remove all possible furniture and remove light fixtures to prevent paint damage. Line the edge of the wall against the ceiling with painter's tape, and cover the remainder of the wall with newspaper. Use drop cloths to cover the floor and any furniture remaining in the room.

    • 2

Vacuum the ceiling to remove cobwebs, dirt and dust. Gently wash the ceiling with a soft, natural sponge moistened with soapy water, and rinse the ceiling clean. Allow the ceiling to dry before applying primer.

    • 3

Open windows and doors for ventilation.

    • 4

Fill a paint sprayer with primer. Choose the appropriate nozzle for your paint sprayer, depending on the type of paint and primer you're using and the area of the ceiling. Use the paint-sprayer tip selector to determine the best tip for your needs (see Resources section).

    • 5

Wear a long-sleeved shirt, pants, old shoes, work gloves, protective goggles, a respirator and work gloves for protection while painting.

    • 6

Climb a ladder and point the sprayer at a 45-degree angle in one corner where the wall meets the ceiling. Spray the primer from one edge to the other and continue applying primer in straight lines, from end to end, until the entire ceiling is coated. Allow the primer to dry for 24 hours before painting.

    • 7

Apply a coat of paint using the same techniques used for applying primer. Allow the coat to dry, and apply another coat if necessary.
