How to Remove Graffiti Vandalism

Graffiti vandalism has been a problem for quite some time. People often find spray paint tags on the walls of abandoned buildings or even buildings still in business. Graffiti is usually tagged to claim territory or label association among gang members. Removing graffiti vandalism can be done by either painting over the affected area or using a thinner such as mineral spirits or terpentine to dissolve the spray paint before it dries.

Instructions

Clean the surface of the vandalized area using water from a hose to remove any dirt or grease that may prevent your new coat of paint from absorbing. Spray water over the affected area and allow the wall to dry before applying paint.

    • 2

Apply a coat of masonry paint along the entire wall. Paint the whole vandalized wall so the paint will look uniform and not patchy. Use a paint roller to apply the masonry paint using long strokes to cover the wall. Roll the paint roller in the paint and roll a line across the top of the wall. Roll the paint roller vertically along the wall until the wall is completely covered. Allow the paint to dry before applying another coat to the surface of the wall.

Use a paint thinner such as mineral spirits or turpentine to remove smaller graffiti tags. Apply a generous amount of mineral spirits or turpentine to the wall. Use clean rags to scrub and wipe away the graffiti from the wall. Continuously change out clean rags once the paint rubs off the wall and transfers to the rag to prevent smearing.
