What Kind of Paint to Paint on a Ceiling With New Drywall?

It is probably safe to say the ceiling is the most ignored part of any room. The time has come to take a fresh look at the long forgotten ceiling. Instead of thinking of it as a mere ceiling, consider it the fifth wall in your room. A newly installed drywall surface offers a fresh canvas. Properly preparing and painting your new ceiling can give your room a dramatic look.
  1. Primer

    • Priming new drywall is an essential first step when painting your ceiling and choosing the correct primer is as important as choosing your paint. PVA primer is commonly used on new drywall. PVA primer is made with polyvinyl acetate. This effectively seals the porosity of the drywall, creating an optimum painting surface.

    Type of Paint

    • Paint is available in a choice of latex or oil-based. Either paint will effectively paint a ceiling, but latex is most commonly used. Latex paint is easy to use, offers easy cleanup and dries faster than oil paint. Most manufacturers offer paints that are specifically formulated to be used on ceilings. Some ceiling paints are tinted, allowing the painter to see where he has painted, but dry white.

    Sheen

    • Paints are available in a variety of sheens or finishes. In general, most ceilings are painted a flat finish. Flat paint does not have a sheen, does not reflect light and hides blemishes and small imperfections on the ceiling surface. However, an eggshell or satin finish may be a better option for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms or areas at risk of spatter. The slightly glossy finish makes the surface easier to clean.

    Color

    • While most ceilings are traditionally white, colored ceilings are becoming more common. Consider your ceiling height when choosing a color. Dark colors may work well in a large area with high ceilings, but may overwhelm small areas with low ceilings. A lighter shade of the wall color may offer a smoother transition from wall to ceiling. Consider experimenting with a metallic or pearl glaze to add a dramatic finish to your ceiling.
