Do You Have to Sand Your Trim if It Is Painted With Semigloss?

Semigloss paint adds an attractive sheen to wood trim. It is also washable, making it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas, such as kitchens and family rooms. However, the same properties that give semigloss its sheen and make it easy to clean also make it tend to reject new paint. For best results, lightly sand all semigloss paint before repainting. Additional prep work is required for trim that is not in excellent shape.
  1. Condition

    • Assess the condition of all trim prior to starting your project. All loose, flaking or peeling paint must be removed before painting can begin. Wet paint picks up dirt and dust, sealing them into the final results. Nail holes, cracks and other imperfections must be patched, as they are extremely obvious on newly painted surfaces.

    Preparation

    • Use a paint scraper and sander to remove all loose paint. Thoroughly wash the trim with a mild detergent solution and rinse thoroughly. Patch all nail holes and cracks, and then sand smooth when dry. When the surface is as clean and smooth as possible, use fine grit sandpaper to lightly sand the entire piece of trim. You do not need to remove clean, well-adhered paint. Instead, the goal is to rough up the surface enough for the new paint to adhere.

    Primer

    • Use a brush and roller to apply an even coat of primer. For best results, always use a thick latex primer. If the trim is made of a type of wood known for its high tannin content, such as cedar or redwood, use a stain-blocking primer. If your final paint color is dark, such as red or black, choose a tinted primer. Paint stores can custom-mix primer colors according to the exact shade of paint you select.

    Painting

    • When the primer is thoroughly dry, apply at least two coats of thick latex paint. Semigloss paint highlights imperfections, so pay close attention to drips and runs. Allow the trim to dry for at least 24 hours between coats. Semigloss paint does not become washable until it has been allowed to cure. Wait at least two weeks before washing the trim and at least a month before scrubbing it.
