How to Remove Paint Stains on Log Cabin Walls

Log cabins provide a rustic environment that is appealing for many people, but they require regular maintenance to keep them in good shape. The wood needs treatment to prevent it from molding or rotting, and paint helps to protect the wood while also providing decoration. Paint needs careful removal to prevent damage to the logs, but a thorough removal assists in repainting the cabin successfully.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down plastic on the floor where you'll be stripping paint to prevent the floor from being affected.

    • 2

Wash off the logs with warm water, a scrubbing sponge and mild detergent to remove any dirt sticking to the wood. This will aid the stripping process. Use a pressure washer on the outside of the cabin to more thoroughly clean the wood, but follow all instructions on the washer to prevent wood damage.

    • 3

Scrape at the paint stains with a scraper or putty knife. Log cabins are generally more rugged and, therefore, scratching the logs is not a large concern. The scraper combined with your earlier washing will remove many of your lingering paint stains.

    • 4

Apply a wood-safe paint stripper to any remaining stains. A stripper not designed for wood will discolor it, while a stripper designed for wood will not have this problem. Follow all instructions on the packaging for best results.

    • 5

Use the scraper to pull off the paint that the stripper weakened.

    • 6

Wash off the wood again after the paint is gone, to remove any remaining chemicals, and dry it with a rag.
