What You Need to Know About Exterior Textured Paint

A fresh paint job can add instant curb appeal to your home, but you can go one step further and give your home a textured finish. Textured exterior paint is not only a decorating tool, but it also covers and disguises imperfections in your brick, concrete and siding. Exterior textured paint is available pre-mixed, or sand additives are available to mix into any paint.
  1. Preparation

    • Scrape or sand any loose or peeling paint from your exterior surface, and clean the surface before painting. The texture will disguise small defects and blemishes on your exterior wall, but it will adhere better to a clean surface. Prime the surface prior to painting to cover stains, raw wood, concrete or masonry.

    Application

    • Choose the correct paint for your exterior surface. Some textured paints are specifically formulated for use on brick and masonry while others may be used on a variety of surfaces, including wood siding. Use a paint roller on large flat surfaces. A roller-cover with a long nap, 1 inch or greater, will maximize paint and texture coverage. Use a sponge or a broom to add a distinctive finish.

    Durability

    • Unlike its interior counterpart, exterior textured paint is specifically designed to withstand the elements. An exterior paint may last for many years. In general, most exterior paints will last between 10 to 15 years, which may vary depending on the quality of paint used, proper preparation and priming of the surface and extreme climate changes.

    Cleaning

    • Your newly textured exterior requires very little maintenance. Occasionally, dirt particles may accumulate on the textured surface, giving the paint a dingy appearance, which is easily remedied. Close all exterior doors and windows, and remove any furniture or potted plants away from the exterior wall. Use a jet setting on your water hose or a low pressure wash. Never use a high pressure wash on your exterior wall. The powerful force of the water could damage your textured finish. Spray your walls, and the dirt will wash away.
