How to Refinish a Chrome Faucet

Painting chrome is challenging because the surface doesn't easily accept paint and most paint jobs do not last. It is important to prepare the surface properly and take your time to do the job well, to ensure the paint lasts as long as possible. Try painting the faucet in a different color for a focal point that stands out in the bathroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Roughen the faucet's surface with sandpaper to help the paint to stick and get rid of any rust or peeling finish.

    • 2

Wash the faucet with an all-purpose cleaner and thoroughly dry it.

    • 3

Cover the surfaces with plastic or painter's tape around the faucet to prevent paint from staining them.

    • 4

Apply a self-etching primer designed for chrome to the faucet. Let the primer dry according to the package directions. Some primers take up to 36 hours to dry. Proper primer also prevents chrome from rusting. Apply a second coat of primer and let it dry.

    • 5

Spray on paint in your color choice. Use short, even bursts of spray paint until the faucet is covered. Allow the paint to dry, then apply a second coat. Ensure it is dry before continuing.

Apply a spray-on clear-coat finish the metal. Allow it to dry, then spray on a second coat. This protects the paint and increases the durability.
