Prepare the arch by cleaning and smoothing it. Use a wire brush to remove debris. Sand rough spots, using sandpaper, to improve the appearance and facilitate paint adhesion. Use a damp rag to wipe away residual sawdust. Allow the arch to dry thoroughly before applying primer.
Stir the primer with a stirring stick to thoroughly blend particulate matter and pigments with the suspension medium. Pour approximately 8 oz. of primer into a small container. Use a sash brush to work the primer into corners, between lattice and to cover fine architectural details. Use a 4-inch brush to cover larger, more accessible areas on the arch. If the arch is already installed in the ground, place the edge of a dustpan or other suitable barrier on the ground when you apply primer to the bottom of the arch. This will prevent dirt from depositing on the paintbrush.
Allow the primer to dry, according to the manufacturer's directions. Much of the first coat of primer may be absorbed by the wood. To create a smooth painting surface and to increase the durability of the finish, apply a second coat of primer. Allow the second coat of primer to thoroughly dry before applying paint.
Stir the paint. Pour approximately 8 oz. of paint into a small container. Apply paint to the corners, between lattice, and to fine architectural details with a sash brush. Pour about 32 oz. of paint into a paint pan or other suitable container. Use a 4-inch brush or paint roller to evenly apply paint over the primed wood. Allow the paint to dry, according to the manufacturer's directions, then apply a second coat.
