The Advantages of Painting With a Foam Roller

While you may commonly paint with a standard fabric-style roller, using a foam roller is often preferable because of the quality finish it provides. Foam rollers are built in a similar manner to their fabric counterparts, with a metal or plastic frame. Instead of the roller being covered in fabric, it's made of absorbent foam.
  1. Performance

    • Foam rollers provide an ideal performance for painting large, smooth surfaces such as walls. While fabric rollers will often leave a texture finish on the wall, foam rollers will give the wall a much smoother finish. This means you can avoid multiple coats and sanding blemishes between coats.

    Absorption

    • Because foam is a more absorbent material than fabric, you can saturate a foam roller with more paint than when you use one made of fabric. This is beneficial because you'll have to roll the roller in a paint tray less often, which is especially convenient when working on a ladder and using a paint tray isn't always practical.

    Dripping

    • Due to the foam roller's high level of absorption of paint, it drips far less frequently than a roller made of fabric. This helps to avoid a mess while painting. Unnoticed drips can damage the floor and furniture and you can easily step in them inadvertently.

    Price

    • Although every store that sells fabric and foam rollers lists them at different prices, the constant is that foam rollers sell for significantly less than those made of fabric. Similarly, foam paint brushes are also cheaper than traditional brushes, due to the low cost of foam. The low cost means you can buy as many as you require without spending a significant amount of money and can throw them out when finished without feeling as though you've wasted a lot of money.
