Instructions

    • 1

Scrub all loose, lifting or flaking paint from the roof's surface, using a long-handled wire brush. Continue to scour any exposed metal to abrade the surface, making it intentionally "scratched." An abraded surface better adheres to paint, according to the Paint & Coatings Resource Center.

    • 2

Wash the roof with detergent to remove all dirt and debris from the metal surface. Use a mop and scrub brush to make quick work of this task.

    • 3

Speak to your local paint supplier about purchasing good-quality roof paint. Manufacturers design metal roof paint to protect your home's roofing as well as to add decorative color. An informative paint retailer will help you choose the right paint for your roof.

    • 4

Mask off the chimney base, vents or anything else that you do not want painted, using painter's tape or masking tape.

    • 5

Apply an exterior metal primer to cover any exposed metal.

    • 6

Apply the roof paint as directed on the label after the washed surface is dry. Work on a dry, cloudy day to avoid adhesion problems caused by excessive heat or dampness. Ideal temperatures for exterior painting are between 50 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 7

Stipple paint around bolts, and brush along all creases and corners to ensure full coverage of everything that the roller will not reach.

    • 8

If you're using a roller, unscrew the short handle and replace it with a long handle from a broom or mop, allowing you to stand comfortably as you paint. Make sure you fully cover the roof with a protective layer of paint. Gaps in the painted surface can allow rain and moisture to penetrate the roof.

    • 9

Apply a second or third layer of paint, allowing sufficient drying time between coats according to the manufacturer's instructions on the label. Applying the maximum recommended coats provides better protection and achieves full color depth.
