The Type of Paint to Use on Exterior Stairway Walls

Exterior stairways are vital parts of many multi-family homes and other structures. In some cases, the exterior stairway is almost completely enclosed and sheltered from most of the elements; in other cases, the stairway is almost entirely exposed to the harsh outdoor elements. The type of paint you need depends on how exposed the exterior stairway is.
  1. Enclosed Stairway

    • If your exterior stairway is enclosed, with just one or maybe two open walls for access, some highly durable interior paints may do the trick. When choosing the paint for this type of stairway, you'll need one with a medium sheen and is easy to clean. Exterior stairways typically get a lot of traffic; the durability factor plays in here. Interior paints used for commercial applications are a good choice as they're made to withstand high-traffic areas.

    Exposed Stairway

    • For an exposed exterior stairway, you'll want to choose an exterior paint that is designed for the type of surface on your walls. If your walls are made of wood; you'll need an exterior paint designed for vertical wood surfaces. Solid-color stains are another option for exposed wood exterior stairways. Solid-color stain goes on like a paint but highlights the grain and other features of the wood. As with interior paints, you'll want to make sure the paint you choose is rated for high-traffic areas. If you are painting the outside wall of your exterior stairway, you'll need an exterior paint.

    Interior Vs. Exterior Paint

    • There are several differences between interior and exterior paints; for example, exterior paints have added products, such as pesticides, mildewcides and ingredients that protect against fading. Because of these ingredients, exterior paints aren't always safe to use in enclosed areas. Interior paints, on the other hand, are designed for covering imperfections and are simpler to clean. You'll need to do a thorough study of how much exposure your exterior stairway walls get before choosing the paint. You can also ask your paint store clerk for the best products for your particular stairway. Some paint stores may even come out and look at your particular stairway to help you decide the best product for your needs.

    Other Products

    • When taking on this project, you'll need to be prepared with a wide array of products to help you complete the job correctly. This includes products for preparation, including a power washer, scrapers, cleaners, a wet/dry vacuum, painter's tape, sanding sponges and other cleaning or preparation materials. You'll also need applicators, such as a paint sprayer, brushes, rollers and extender poles. Ask your paint store representative about the proper primer for your project, as well.
