How to Get Old Paint Off Moldings

Paint stripper is the key to removing old paint from moldings. The crisp, clean lines of molding are dulled by multiple coats of paint and in older homes, moldings may contain dangerous and potentially toxic lead paint. Paint stripper will remove multiple layers of paint in a matter of minutes. Once the old paint is removed, you may opt to repaint the moldings or the wood can be stained and polyurethanes for a natural appearance.

Scrape off the paint with a putty knife. Repeat the application and scraping process, working in 5-foot sections, until the entire molding is free of paint.
