How to Estimate Square Footage for Walls

Estimating square footage is an important part for a number of home improvements, including putting a fresh coat of paint on the wall. Knowing how many square feet the walls are helps you purchase the correct amount of materials without having too much left over -- or not enough. Measuring the square footage of walls in a room with even ceilings is simpler than measuring for a room with uneven ceilings such as a room with a cathedral ceiling.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of your walls to your ceilings.

    • 2

Measure the length of each wall and add the figures together.

    • 3

Multiply the height of the ceiling by the total length of your walls. This is the square footage of your walls if your room has even ceilings.

    • 4

Measure the height difference of any ceiling that sits higher than the rest of your ceilings. These height differences are the result of the peaks of cathedral or vault ceilings. To do this, measure from the peak of the wall at the highest point down to the height of the rest of the ceiling.

    • 5

Multiply this height difference by the length of the wall, then divide by two. This will give the area of the triangle-shaped wall leading to the peak of the vaulted veiling.

    • 6

Add this number to the square footage of the other walls. The total will be the total area of your walls in square feet.
