How to Use Vinyl on Latex Paints

If you have a room or a wall that is already painted with standard latex paint, you can easily repaint the area with a vinyl latex paint. Vinyl latex paints are water-soluble, like all latex and acrylic paints, but the vinyl additive improves drying time and durability. Painting with vinyl latex over standard latex is very similar to other types of house painting projects, but care must be taken to select the right materials. With the right preparation, you can coat vinyl over latex paint in an afternoon.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove as much furniture as possible from the area to be painted, particularly around the wall or walls in question. Cover any remaining furniture with drop cloths, and lay drop cloths onto the floor to catch any spills or drips.

    • 2

Coat the wall with a thin layer of vinyl latex primer. Apply the primer with a medium-nap paint roller, and use an angled brush to reach moldings and trim areas. Allow the primer to dry for one hour.

    • 3

Paint the wall with a coat of vinyl latex paint, beginning with the trim work. Use a roller to cover the large areas. The roller will eliminate some of the brush marks around the edges of the trim areas, where the marks are most noticeable. Allow the paint to dry for one hour before applying a second coat.

Clean your brushes and paint rollers with water. If you plan to use the same paint within a day or two, store the used rollers in tightly wrapped plastic bags.
