How to Get Scrunge Scratches Out of Clear Coat

The majority of modern cars are finished with a type of automotive paint called clear-coat. This coating protects your car's paint job from minor scratches and other damaging factors. However, this does not mean that you can use just any cleaning product or tool to wash your car. If you use a scrunge, short for scrubbing sponge, the type of sponge with a scouring pad attached, to clean your car, you will end up with hundreds of micro-scratches that you will need to buff out.

Things You'll Need

  • Spray bottle
  • 2000-grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • Sponge pad
  • Rubbing compound
  • Power buffer
  • Round-edged compounding pad
  • Polishing compound

Instructions

    • 1

Spritz the scratched area with a water bottle full of clean water. Attach the wet/dry sandpaper to the sponge pad and spray it with water, too.

    • 2

Sand the scratched area. Spray the area and the sandpaper with water frequently to keep both surfaces wet. Continue sanding until the scratches are gone.

    • 3

Rinse the area thoroughly to get rid of any grit. Apply a coat of rubbing compound directly onto the surface of the clear coat.

    • 4

Attach the compounding pad to the buffer, then dab the compound over the affected area with the compounding pad. Turn the buffer on very slowly and move it back and forth over the affected area -- do not stop moving the buffer while it is in contact with the car. Continue buffing until the rubbing compound is no longer visible.

    • 5

Remove the compounding pad and attach the polishing pad to your buffer. Apply a small amount of polishing compound or wax to the affected area and buff it into the clear coat with the buffer.
